Empedocles’s Apotheosis

The philosopher Empedocles wished at the end of his life to be thought a god.  In order to accomplish this, he needed to completely vanish from the earth, in order that he might be thought to have ascended to the heavens.  To this end, he threw himself into Mount Etna, a Sicilian volcano.  However, the volcano spit out one of his burnt sandals, ruining his plan.
